Debaser for Photoshop

Comic Color Fills
for Photoshop

Rated 4.9 out of 5
Based on 38 reviews

Developed in collaboration with designer, illustrator, and low-brow comic fetishist Ryan Besch, Debaser authentically re-creates the low-fi aesthetic of vintage comic book printing from the comfort of your digital studio.

Based on authentic pre-digital color formulas and line screen angles used during the Golden, Silver, Bronze and Dark Ages of comic book publishing, we've built a huge package of ready-to-use pattern swatches, actions and textures complete with a streamlined process for applying them to your work.

Join us on a journey back to when brush and ink ruled the studio; digital publishing was but a sweaty fantasy and everyone smoked like it was a cure for cancer.

What's Included

  • A 125 color pattern library based on pre-digital color formulas and print-production specifications. Lightly distressed for authentic results.
  • 13 x archival paper and stain texture PSD's in classic comic book format (6 5/8" x 10 1/8") @2X resolution (3969px x 6073px).
  • 10 x distressing actions for roughening your keyline art.
  • 14 x coloring shortcut actions to quickly perform common tasks such as adding new color layers and layer masks.
  • 3 x reference color charts for the Golden, Silver/Bronze, and Dark ages of comic book publishing.
  • 1 x installation guide.
  • 1 x comprehensive written tutorial detailing every step of the process along with tricks and tips for authentically re-creating the low-fi aesthetic of vintage comic book printing.
  • 1 x paper texture cheat sheet.

What You'll Dig

  • Import and mask pre-mixed comic color fills straight into your work.
  • Roughens and distresses your keyline art with control over ink color, distressing scale, and texture intensity.
  • Non-destructive - keeps your original artwork intact.

Compare Debaser & KraftTone

DEBASER

Fast comic coloring with minimal customization via a pattern library-based process. X-Large download size and moderate setup required.

  • For experienced to expert users.
  • Pattern library-based process for faster, out-of-the-box coloring.
  • Produces up to 124 colors.
  • Available for Photoshop, Procreate
  • Dot screen formulas only.
  • Not suitable for screenprinting.
  • Colors are not customizable.
  • Download Size: 6gb.

KRAFTTONE

Highly customizable, brush-based process for maximum authenticity. Medium download size and minimal setup required.

  • For Novice to Expert Users.
  • Brush-based process that closely replicates traditional processes.
  • Produces up to 374 colors.
  • Dot and line screen color formulas.
  • Available for Photoshop, Procreate, Clip Studio + Affinity.
  • Pre-separated, ready for screenprinting.
  • Designed for complete customization, including distressing, ink, stain, and registration effects.
  • Download Size: 1.2gb

KraftTone allows for complete control over your effects since each color formula is created from scratch rather than importing pre-composited pattern fills. You can add as much or as little distressing as you like, add stains with one tap and create your own registration errors. It's also very easy to export separations for screenprinting.

Debaser by contrast, has fewer customization options but with distressing and print effects built into each pre-mixed pattern, the colors create an authentic aesthetic with little to no further adjustment necessary.

What Debaser lacks in customization, it makes up for in speed. There is a learning curve to begin with, but once you've mastered the process, it's a little faster to use than KraftTone, especially if you like to change colors on a whim. In Photoshop especially, colors can be changed in seconds, and Procreate is not far behind.

In conclusion, both KraftTone and Debaser have their advantages and it largely comes down to what you are trying to achieve with your work. Many artists use both packs interchangeably depending on the level of customization or speed required and if you can only afford one or the other, you really won't be disappointed either way.

Featured Artwork By Ryan Besch

Ryan Besch is a multi-talented designer, low-brow illustrator, and DIY merch maker from Buffalo, NY. Inspired by the taboo underbelly of the cultural landscape, Ryan's work features a cast of unseemly characters, from smoking hotdog-banana's and bird flipping condoms to sweaty gimp mask dungeon-masters and cigarette smoking foods.

Mostly working in pen, brush and ink, Ryan's illustration work reflects his love of  vintage comics and low-brow humor whilst his graphic design and poster work is a masterclass in textural witchcraft and screen-printed aesthetics.

With an impressive list of clients including Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Kills, Phish, The Black Keys and Nitro Snowboards, Ryan still finds time to work on his self-published range of t-shirts, posters, stickers and pins under his brand Weird Sin Industries.
